SAN ANTONIO — Before a standing-room-only crowd Saturday, 20 contestants took the stage at Performing Arts San Antonio for the 2014 Miss Magnificent Pageant.

The Miss and Mr. Magnificent Pageant was Held at Southwest High School
The Miss and Mr. Magnificent Pageant was held at Southwest High School last month and was a memorable night for the students. Congratulations to Ti M. on being crowned King and winning the Talent Competition for his performance of the “Drummer Boy” on the Tuba. Also, congratulations to Claudia P. on being crowned Queen. She did a beautiful rendition of Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You”. Laura, Yanis, and Xochitl also received participation awards. Thanks to Ms. Avila and her Southwest High School Cosmetology students for volunteering their time to do hair and make-up on the pageant contestants. This really made the contestants look and feel beautiful. Also, thank you to Mr. Hays, Kary Driesse, Felicia Gates and her student council students, Mr. Black, Janet Perry, Best Buddies, and Theater Arts for their help and support. None of this would be possible with the vision of Lillian Reeves, the Founder of the Miss & Mr. Magnificent Pageant.

Free Special Needs Pageant Shines New Spotlight
Lillian Townsend-Reeves started competing in pageants as a girl, learning confidence and self-worth while helping her transform from a shy teen to an outgoing woman. “It ended up completely changing my life,” she said. In the five years she competed, Townsend-Reeves couldn’t help but notice her best friend Lauren Murphree, who had cerebral palsy, did not have those same opportunities. Alyssa Hernandez wasn’t thinking about her walker, her glasses or her leg braces as she concentrated on the cards lying on the table in front of her. She wanted only one thing in that moment. She wanted to win. The 8-year-old gently lifted a card with her finger and turned it over, waiting to discover whether she had found a match. Her furrowed brow immediately smoothed out as a smile spread across her face. Four excited words shot out from her mouth: “I won! I won!”
Contestants Sparkle at Special Needs Pageant
Elizabeth Schmidt’s burgundy dress sparkled as she twirled in front of a giant gold and blue glittery “M.”
Schmidt, one of the contestants in the Miss Magnificent Pageant, stole the spotlight while being introduced, wooing the crowd with her favorite song — the national anthem. The 35-year-old belted out the last line like a rock star, and the audience of about 100 erupted in cheers.
Miss Magnificent pageant has a special purpose
Miss Magnificent pageants are designed for individuals with a disability. Founder and executive director of Miss Magnificent Pageants, Lillian Reeves, said the pageants give those with special needs the opportunity to show off their personalities and skills.
Participants get to enjoy being the center of attention as they show off their talents, and everyone walks away a winner. The goal of the pageant is to build confidence, self-esteem, and communication skills.
